A bed for a dog is a place where it always feels comfortable. It is not surprising that most owners prefer to take this “island of safety” very seriously. Even the sizes of products for dogs of the large, medium, and small breeds will differ. What can we say about the shape or the degree of rigidity – the individual preferences of pets and their sleeping habits are essential here?
What should be a comfortable bed for a dog? The range of options produced today by different manufacturers is practically inexhaustible. There are “nests”, baskets, laconic rugs, full-fledged orthopedic mattresses, and pillows soft as fluff. For the most active and restless, even vandal-proof dog beds are produced that can withstand contact with teeth and claws.
The ideal solution for a large dog or a compact but very long-legged pet is a rug or flatbed without sides. It can look like a reasonably dense mattress – there are options with coconut, like children’s ones, but more durable and practical. It is better to choose the most luxuriant materials with soft pile as upholstery: flock, corduroy. Thinner fabrics will quickly become unusable, especially if the pet is actively digging around or loves to chase its tail without leaving the litter.
With sides
Dog benches with sides are exactly what the pet would choose. They are ideal for those who like to dig their habitat and hide toys or their nose while sleeping. Such a “bed” provides the animal with the desired shelter from intrusive attention and can serve as an observation point for real hunters. Models with soft sides and a curvy base are chosen mainly by owners of dogs of medium or large breeds.
It is better for the smallest to immediately buy an option on a rigid frame made of wood or metal. If the floor is cold or the pet has kidney problems. The inner space of such a couch is lined with a soft mattress of the required size with replaceable covers – you can have winter and summer options.
The basket is another option for a shelter with sides. Such sleeping places are made of plastic or natural vine/rattan, and fluffy bedding or pillow in an anti-vandal cover must also be placed inside. For dwarf breeds today, it is proposed to use small sofas for sleeping. They can be with different fillings be completed with accessories. This is just a pedestal equipped with a back and side bumpers, most often in an angular design.
Usually, dog owners have to make their choice between beds and houses. Why is the first option better, and why should the second be chosen only for the most fastidious pets? Any animal taller than 25 cm at the withers in a confined space will feel quite uncomfortable. If the pet is also physically active, the owner will regularly find his refuge in the house or apartment unexpectedly.
The complexity of hygienic care is another reason for refusing to buy a house. If the couch is comfortable disinfecting, steam, or change the cover, then the rigidly fixed upholstery will not allow such liberties. As a result, over time, the home will emit a rather unpleasant odor. It’s also not very useful for the animal’s fur to be in a tight space – it can be wiped off in areas in contact with the walls.
Dimensions and shapes
What is the best size for your dog? First of all, you need to measure the pet itself: from the tip of the tail to the nose. The value obtained should be increased by 15–20 cm for a plank bed with sides and 20–30 cm for a mattress without sides.
The height of the body – from the pads to the croup – will help determine the bed’s width. This parameter needs to be doubled so that the pet is comfortable sleeping on its side.
120×80 cm – an option for large shepherd dogs, retrievers, Great Danes;
110×70 cm – for dogs above average height: Dobermans, collies, cops;
90×60 cm – for spaniels, terriers, bulldogs, and bassets;
70×50 cm – for small breeds: from fox terriers to lapdogs;
50×40 cm – for the most miniature animals, most often made with sides, in the form of baskets.
The shape is selected, taking into account the habits of the pet, its temperament. Those dogs that like to sleep curled up, round and oval loungers with bolsters along the sides are suitable options for a sense of comfort and privacy.
If the pet, even in a dream, falls apart with convenience, stretching out its paws, the option of a rectangular bed is suitable. Practical quilted models are ideal if the pet regularly empties the bladder in the wrong place – it is convenient to cover them with an absorbent diaper.
Selection rules
There are specific rules for buying a dog bed. First of all, it is worth considering the following points.
The size of the animal. You should purchase the most spacious bed on which the large can stretch your paws. If we are talking about a puppy, there are two options for the development of events. It is recommended for a large breed to first purchase the “children’s” version, with a reasonably soft base, and then – a full-fledged adult berth. It is better for small and medium-sized dogs to immediately choose a bed for growth or buy a transforming model with variable dimensions.
The simplicity in care.
The soft part of the litter should be made of hypoallergenic fabric, dense enough, washable well; it is better to choose artificial fluff as a filler. A quality product has an additional antistatic effect. A plastic or wooden frame should repel water. It is excluded the presence of sensitive parts, about which the pet can get hurt.
Color spectrum. Beds for small breeds of dogs are often painted in the most stunning colors. The pet itself is indifferent to this moment, but the owner should consider that spots, drops of saliva, traces of dirty paws will be very noticeable on the light-matter. If the dark bed does not look pretty enough, you can sew a few bright replacement covers for it.
Convenience. The owners often strive to choose a bed for a small dog in the form of a full-fledged house, but the pet feels much more comfortable in containers that look like baskets – with an open top. Products with sides have their characteristics – an accumulation of dirt and dust forms in the layer between the base and the soft liner. It will have to be carefully removed by hand with every cleaning.
The degree of openness. Short-haired pets will prefer more closed models with a voluminous soft mattress. Dogs with long hair most often choose the most superficial bunk beds for sleeping on which you can lie with your paws spread.
Cost. Even a homemade option won’t be too cheap. It is also better not to save on a purchased couch. It must be made of high-quality materials – modern and safe. You should avoid purchasing brightly colored products – they can shed.
